Dark Idol is a horror writing contest that first debuted in 2004. Rick Mohr, editor of New Camp Horror, came up with the idea to help new; undiscovered horror writers get their chance to showcase their talent to their peers.

Unfortunately, Rick's hard work was thwarted in the final round when the site was hacked and he was attacked with accusations of foul play and favouritism. Rick was so crushed he cancelled the contest and moved on to help writers on a more personal level.

Gwenyth Love was one of those writers.

As a dedication to Rick Mohr, and all the other helpful people in the horror industry, we wanted to offer this contest again to the new writers out there interested in sharing their dark fiction with the world.

If you are a horror/dark fiction writer and have yet to be published in a printed, bound format, under your own or a pen name (as part of an anthology is fine) then this is your chance to gain exposure!

The winner will receive a full personal edit and critique from Wendy Barnard of The Barnard Agency.

Also, at the conclusion of the contest, Burning Effigy Press will publish a special "Dark Idol" edition of their annual FRESH BLOOD anthology, tentatively titled FRESH BLOOD: DARK IDOL, which will feature one 5000-word story each from the first, second and third place finishers.

FRESH BLOOD: DARK IDOL and its contributors will receive all the perks that other BE authors and titles are afforded. As such, contributors will receive both an advance and 10 author copies, and be eligible to earn further royalties/author copies after the first 100 books have sold. The FRESH BLOOD: DARK IDOL chapbook will remain in print for three years; it will be offered for sale on the press' website (www.burningeffigy.com) and be promoted as an official part of the FRESH BLOOD anthology line. The tentative release date for the collection is August 2010. Furthermore, FRESH BLOOD: DARK IDOL authors will be looped in on all promotional activities scheduled for other BE talent, including the opportunity to sign up for autograph sessions and readings at BE scheduled events/cons/press fairs/etc.

Please read the Dark Idol rules carefully before submitting your work. If you have any queries regarding the rules and guidelines, please don't hesitate to contact us at darkidolcontest@gmail.com.

Good luck to all the Dark Idol contestants!
